An Introduction to Communication Network Analysis -
This book is a quantitative text, which focuses on the real issues behind serious modeling and analysis of communications networks. The author covers all the necessary mathematics and theory in order for student to understand the tools that optimize computer networks today. The book consists of six chapters, which can be divided into two parts: the first three chapters form the mathematical section while the last three chapters for the networking part. The first chapter reviews the elementary knowledge of probability theory, especially various distributions of random variables, including the Bernoulli distribution and the geometric distribution. The second and third chapters introduce two probabilistic models: continuous-time Markov chain and queueing theory. With this mathematical knowledge, the latter three chapters introduce the performance evaluation for communication networks, including topics of multiplexing and shaping of packet flows (chapter 4), queueing networks (chapter 5), and network revenue models (chapter 6).
